Julia Bugram: She Was Here
A participatory audio installation with visual memory collage Context: The exhibition space FRAU* schafft Raum (Nussdorfer Str. 4, 1090 Vienna) is dedicated to artistic engagement with the topic of violence against women* and transforms the former site of a violent crime into a place of remembrance, solidarity, and prevention. As Vienna's first feminist art space of this kind, it makes experiences, stories, and structural connections visible and provides space for artistic positions that work against forgetting and silence. The exhibition program is juried and there are 3 exhibition projects per call that receive confirmation for project implementation. The jury of the 3rd Open Call consisted of Julia Hartmann (Curator), Stefanie Huhndorf (Human Rights Office of the City of Vienna), Heidemarie Kargl (Women's Service of the City of Vienna), Ana Halina Ringleb (Artist), and Nina Schedlmayer (Art Journalist). All submissions were presented anonymously to the jurors — on this basis the project awards were made. Concept: Every woman* who was torn from life through femicide leaves traces — fleeting, quiet, scattered. We are shocked by these events, but in public the affected voices often remain unheard. 'She Was Here' is a walk-through audio installation that attempts to give these voices space and resonance. The following concept consists of three levels: an audio installation, a possibility for participation, as well as drawn memories. Whispers Against Forgetting (Audio Installation) Inside the art space, several small speakers are installed. They reproduce voices of people who knew victims (such as Nadine W.) — memories, sentences, sounds connected to the lives of women who became victims of femicide and can no longer be in our midst. Examples: 'She always liked to read the newspaper with her coffee in the morning'
