Many of us, myself included, have grown a bit tired of constantly reading and hearing about care, particularly in the visual arts. However, the problem of oversaturation does not lie in the philosophical, sociopolitical and lived field itself, but rather in the strong generalization and conflation, right up to the capitalization of its diverse meanings and qualities. If we take medical care work as an example, we see that instead of (self-)love and a deep humanistic understanding of shared care, care work repeatedly appears as a symbolized, theorized and appropriated field of opinion. Yet caregivers, whether professionally working nurses or untrained companions, exist entirely without applause, visibility and external evaluation. Their work produces a productive ambiguity that goes far beyond binary-regulated giving and taking, since the body in need of care demands constant attention. This form of care work is notoriously expensive and brings ugly side effects with it, including shame, disgust and the suppression of gazes, feelings and yearnings. Containment & Desire in the Leaking Body is an approach to the place, time and experience of taboos and illuminates ostensibly dirty and abject aspects from the perspective of a queer, caring artist by the name of Paul Prothesis. In his first exhibition, disabled and disabling visibilities and intimacies, emotional and physical leakages, phantom limbs and wound dressings as well as questions of masculinity are negotiated, together with the desire to remain permeable in close relationships with illness.
