Outside it had started to rain. Or it had been raining for a while and I hadn't noticed. The city lay behind the glass, blurred and real, while next to me a woman in another year stood at another window and perhaps waited or just smoked. Walter stepped beside me. WALTER: And? I held my hand over the microphone. ME: And what? WALTER: Is everything okay now? ME: Of course not. He nodded, as if that had reassured him. On the phone Jerk said my name. For a moment we all reflected in the window, Walter, you and me; Jerk not, although I heard his voice. I put my hand to the pane. It was cold. JERK: Can you hear me? ME: Yes. JERK: What are you doing? I saw our reflections, the images behind us and the dark city in front of us, or the other way around. ME: I'm trying to figure out who is looking at whom here. JERK: What? I thought of Althoff. 'You will never understand this.' And: 'How wonderful it would be if you could.' ME: Whether one can love someone without understanding them. A pause. I looked at Walter. He looked back. JERK: And? ME: Don't know.
