On painting, attention, and the space that abstraction opens up. There are ways of lingering with something that exceeds our understanding, and there is a form of attention that cannot be measured because it produces nothing immediately useful. It does not optimize, predicts nothing, and does not accelerate. It lingers and allows the world to remain partially opaque, accepting that what is essential often withdraws precisely at the moment we try to possess it. Before interpretation, before language settles into certainty, there is the duration of seeing/viewing. It is neither passive nor analytical; it resembles waiting more than knowing. A painting has always relied on this improbable interval: the moment of pause, in which recognition hesitates, perception endures after identification is already complete. Precisely in this hesitant suspended state do images gain density – not through what they represent, but through the strange persistence with which they continue to accompany us. There are also forms of knowledge that diminish the world. Every answer closes a door; every definition draws a boundary. Our time is a master of this procedure: it transforms forests into resources, faces into data, attention into currency, memory into storage, culture into content. The unknown is treated as a technical problem, ambiguity as a temporary disturbance requiring an efficient solution. Yet perhaps the world never asked to become transparent. Art has always been part of this resistance – not because it refuses knowledge, but because it understands another way of knowing. Perhaps beauty never belonged to objects – perhaps it exists only in the relationship between bodies and forms and appears fleetingly whenever attention goes beyond function. Perhaps beauty was based
