Architecture Film Matinee: Autobahn

No other structure of automobile mobility has shaped our lives and landscapes more comprehensively over the last 100 years than the motorway: The Architecture Film Matinee at Filmcasino, curated by Lotte Schreiber, presents two films that engage with the motorway as a structure between promises of happiness and destruction: Autobahn-Knoten-Raten (Christoph Schwarz, AT 2022, 4min, OF) The car-centric urban planning of the 1970s sacrificed Vienna's most beautiful corners to motorway infrastructure. A hostile-to-humans mobility paradigm, documented by Vienna's aerial photography collection, reinterpreted as a playful guessing game. Autobahn (Daniel Abma, DE 2019, 85 min, OmeU) Due to a missing section of the motorway route between Warsaw and Rotterdam, thousands of lorries squeeze through the city centre of Bad Oeynhausen daily. Closing the gap is controversial and the protracted process surrounding completion of the motorway section generates hope and despair. For eight years, the Dutch-German documentary filmmaker accompanied affected residents. An impressive long-term portrait of the consequences of ever-growing mobility demands that increasingly reach their limits. Following the screenings, we will discuss with Klara Schenk, climate and mobility expert at VCÖ - Mobilität mit Zukunft, and Jutta Matysek, Initiative Rettet die Lobau – Natur statt Beton, about the motorway as infrastructure, current motorway projects and alternatives for a contemporary mobility transition.
