Gürtel Expedition 2026

A performative exploration mission in street space The Vienna Gürtel is one of the city's most significant main traffic arteries. This magnificent street from the 19th century is today Austria's most heavily trafficked provincial road. How did it come to this? How does the Gürtel hold the city together, how does it constrict it? And what potential exists to reinterpret this gigantic street as public space? The urbanists at LAUT invite you to the Gürtel Expedition 2026: On foot, the entire length of the Vienna Gürtel will be traversed, equipped with discursive tools for accompanying investigations along the way. The Northwest expedition section (Section I) starts on Friday at Spittelau and leads along the Westgürtel, across the Wiental and the Südgürtel to Matzleinsdorfer Platz. The Southeast expedition section (Section II) starts at the Mozart grave at St. Marxer Friedhof and leads westward along the Südgürtel to Matzleinsdorfer Platz. The expedition ends there at approximately 14:00. Become part of the expedition team and get involved! Required equipment for the expedition: sturdy footwear, weatherproof clothing, provisions and your own documentation materials.
