Jon Cuyson: Paratethys / Pakikiramdam

Project Four unites four forms of artistic creation: visual art, music, literature, and performance. Through exhibitions, collaborative projects, and open discussions, it creates encounters between artists and audiences that go beyond the finished work. At its core is the desire to bring audiences closer to the processes, questions, and experiences that shape artistic creation, so that ideas can not only be understood but also felt. On the occasion of Vienna Art Week 2026, Project Four presents the work Paratethys / Pakikiramdam (Sensing the Sea) by Philippine artist Jon Cuyson, curated by Klaus Speidel and Ken Mapayo. Drawing on Vienna's geological past beneath the former Paratethys Sea, Cuyson brings this sunken history into dialogue with 'Pakikiramdam', a Philippine way of perceiving one's surroundings and attuning oneself to them. Using painting, sculpture, sound, and moving images, the project transforms a Viennese cellar into a space where we can feel what lies beneath us, around us, and within us. The project is accompanied by film screenings, guided tours, and discussions, including a planned lecture with a Paratethys expert from the Natural History Museum Vienna. The museum's research describes the ancient Paratethys as an extraordinary biodiversity hotspot in the Miocene, whose species richness today is surpassed only by the tropical marine diversity around the Philippines. This unexpected connection lets Vienna's vanished sea resonate with the living marine ecosystems of the Philippines, connecting two distant habitats across the depths of time.
