Modified Grounds #3 Vorago
Katrin Hornek / Judith Unterpertinger Modified Grounds #3 Vorago Performative Sound Installation The highest elevation in Vienna's Donaustadt is a 'mountain of waste', grown over decades from residual rubbish: The landfill in Rautenweg is the site of the performative sound installation 'Modified Grounds #3' by visual artist Katrin Hornek and composer Judith Unterpertinger. They understand the landfill body as a symbol of a state of permanent digestion and simultaneous indigestibility: waste does not disappear, but settles and permanently inscribes itself into the earth's surface. As a result of chemical and thermal processes, it continues to 'breathe', transforms itself. A memory of global consumption processes emerges. In their multi-part work series 'Modified Grounds', Hornek and Unterpertinger investigate geological changes caused by human building, production and consumption processes. Data, scientific descriptions and narratives of geological, industrial and urban material movements are read by the artists as a score and translated into musical structures. In the form of site-specific works, these become acoustically and physically tangible: While the first part (2018) took place in a building materials industry company and the second part (2019) in a steel-reinforced concrete bridge construction, the third part now leads, realised
